100 Celebrating 100

What do Holy Trinity Church, the BBC, and Reader’s Digest all have in common? Answer below.

Friday 18th March 2022 saw the first major Holy Trinity Church Centenary Event – the Centenary Quiz. Around 100 people exercised their grey matter in teams of six to fight for the privilege of being Centenary Quiz Champions.

As in other years, the quiz was compiled and presented by Ros and Robin Johnson, but where does the inspiration for the quiz come from?

“We have a lot of books at home, some general reference and some specific quiz books and these form the basis of what we prepared for tonight and other quizzes down the years,” said Robin.

“We usually have an idea of where we want to go, with various categories, and then we go through the books to see how we can home in on those ideas. What is important is making sure that the questions have a specific answer. Sometimes, even in quiz books, the answers are not clear, so after Ros has set the questions, I agonise over whether or not the answers are clear-cut, and that can take time for both of us.

“I was surprised that the scores were lower than we expected because, we both thought it was a straightforward quiz. But, at the end of the night, if people have had a good time, have met others and have had good a chat, then we are delighted with how it went.”

While the marking was being completed, Revd Tim Sanderson showed a presentation which included British Pathé News footage from when the church was consecrated in September 1922. He spoke about the difficulties the church faced then and now, but stressed the faithfulness of God throughout the church’s 100 years.

“In September 1922, this church was completed and the doors were thrown open to serve the community around us,” he said.

“We celebrate the people who have been part of this community for 100 years. But most of all we celebrate our God who has been with us and who is unchanging and faithful, and who is just as relevant for us in 2022, as we navigate Covid and the war in the Ukraine, as He was in 1922 when they were navigating Spanish Flu and the aftermath of World War I. A different world, but we believe in the same God.”

For the record, the Centenary Quiz Champions were the team of ‘Unit 4 plus 2’, and yes, the answer to the questions at the top of this piece is, of course, all three are celebrating their centenary this year.
